Star apple is a native to the Greater Antilles and the West Indies. It had spread to the lowlands of Central America but now this fruit is widely cultivated in most of tropical countries including Southeast Asia. In the Philippines, we call it Caimito. Some of its other popular names are Cainito, golden leaf tree, Abiaba, Estrella, Milk fruit and Aguay. It is popular worldwide because of its sweet and tangy taste. However, it is not the type of fruit you can find easily in the grocery stores. Star apple gets its name from the interesting “star bust” core pattern that can be seen when the fruit is cut in half.
